Ukrainian air defenses knocked down 24 of 27 Russian drones involved in assaults overnight on July 5-6.

A Russian attack on a Ukrainian power plant has cut off electricity to 100,000 residents in Sumy's northwest.

According to national grid operator Ukrenergo, efforts are underway to restore electricity after the strikes that resulted in emergency shut-offs for customers in the Russian border city and district of Sumy.

Aside from the energy facility, no further casualties or damage were reported, according to Reuters.

Russia keeps attacking Ukraine's electricity infrastructure, frequently causing protracted blackouts that leave citizens suffering through blistering summer temperatures without access to running water, air conditioning, or life-saving medical supplies.

According to the national energy firm Ukrenergo, Ukraine has lost nine gigawatts of generating capacity in just the last three months alone. All of its thermal power plants have been destroyed by hostile action, and all of its hydroelectric sites have been damaged by missile strikes or drone attacks.

According to the national grid operator, this is sufficient to power the entire Netherlands at peak usage hours and more than a third of the capacity Ukraine had before to Russia's full-scale invasion starting in February 2022.

In order to assist Ukraine in coping with the Russian strikes, Poland has been transferring excess electricity to the country; however, Ukrenego has planned daily power outages throughout the nation because local production and imports of electricity were unable to make up the shortfall.

Maria Tsaturian of Ukrenergo told the news channel’s  that she is aware of the resentment that her organization faces for frequently, prolongedly, and for a large number of its customers' power outages. But there's no other choice, she claims.

We are engaged in combat. One of the objectives of the Russian terrorists is the energy sector. And the reason is clear: electricity is the foundation of all life and civilization, the speaker claims.

"We have to pay this price to be free."

According to a Telegram report by the Air Force Command, Ukrainian air defenses downed 24 of the 27 Shahed kamikaze drones that Russia had launched on the evening of July 5 and 6.

According to the report, electronic jamming and anti-air defenses were used to intercept the drones over regions that included the Sumy region.
