 The new cabinet's London-based members.

The first cabinet meeting was called by Sir Keir Starmer on Saturday morning

A number of Londoners, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, are holding their first cabinet meeting on the first full day of the new Labour government.

Here's some bit each of them:

   Prime minister, sir Keir   Starmer

Holborn and St Pancras MP Sir Keir Starmer, the newly appointed prime minister.

Sir Keir Starmer, a Southwark, London native, is the first leader of the Labour Party to topple an incumbent Conservative government since Tony Blair's resounding win in 1997.

He claims to have come from a "working class background" and talks about growing up in a "pebble-dash semi" in Oxted, Surrey, where his mother was a nurse and his father was a toolmaker.

Prior to taking office as the MP for Holborn and St. Pancras in north London, Sir Keir served as director of public prosecutions from 2008 to 2013 and received legal training with a focus on human rights issues.

Chancellor, Rachel Reeves

South London-born Rachel Reeves is the first woman to serve as chancellor of the exchequer.

Prior to winning the Leeds West seat in the 2010 election, she was employed as an economist. She currently serves as Leeds West and Pudsey's MP.

Following the party's loss in the 2021 Hartlepool by-election, she took on the role of shadow chancellor under Sir Keir Starmer, and Labour's victory places her in a crucial position within the government.

Ms Reeves claims she intends to stick to current rigorous expenditure targets and has courted the City of London, persuading previous and present business leaders to support Labour's economic policies.

Ellie Reeves, her younger sister, is a Labour MP and has been involved in politics since 2017.

Health Secretary, Wes Streeting

Since November 2021, Wes Streeting has served as a role shadow.

After being elevated to the shadow position, he quickly caused controversy by declaring that he would not "pretend the NHS was the envy of the world" and by insisting that changes would need to be made to the service under a Labour government.

The Ilford North MP, who was 38 years old at the time of his kidney cancer diagnosis and treatment earlier in 2021, had further personal grounds for applauding the NHS.

In a memoir he wrote about the event, he also talked about growing up as a gay Christian, visiting his bank robber grandpa in prison, and living in an East End council flat in London.

Prior to being elected to Parliament in 2015, Mr. Streeting held positions as a councillor for London and president of the National Union of StudeLammy

Foreign Secretary, David Lammy

David Lammy, who was reared by his mother after his father abandoned them at the age of 12, after being born to Guyanese parents in north London, became the first Black British student to pursue a master's degree in law at Harvard.

He was elected to Parliament as the youngest MP in 2000 at the age of 27, and he later served as a junior minister under Gordon Brown and Sir Tony Blair.

Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband

The most well-known aspect of Ed Miliband's career is that he was the winner of the Labour Party's 2010 general election leadership contest, defeating several opponents, including his older brother David.

The north Londoner has recently made waves for his dedication to combating climate change, especially for his endorsement of the party's now-reduced Green Prosperity Plan, which invests in green sectors.

Despite becoming the MP for Doncaster North in 2005, he has been involved in Labour politics for a far longer time, having worked for Labour MPs prior to the 1997 election victory and serving as Mr. Brown's special adviser when he was appointed chancellor.

While Mr. Miliband's father was a Polish Jewish Marxist academic born in Belgium, his mother is a human rights activist and survivor of the Holocaust.

David has owned a home in Primrose Hill, Camden, where the family resided, since 2010.

Additionally, he has co-hosted the Reasons to be Cheerful podcast since 2017.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn

From 1999 to 2024, Hilary Benn, a seasoned member of parliament from Hammersmith in west London, served as Leeds Central's representative. He currently serves as Leeds South's MP.

Having worked for Labour prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, she is no stranger to the cabinet table.

He has been a prominent Labour figure in opposition, having held the positions of chairman of the Brexit Select Committee and shadow foreign secretary.

He is the son of seasoned left-wing activist Tony Benn, who held cabinet positions under Labour prime leaders James Callaghan and Harold Wilson.
