A swiftly spreading wildfire on Monday caused numerous homes to catch fire in a California hillside enclave, forcing residents to evacuate while hundreds of firefighters battled to contain the flames.
California's San Bernardino -- A rapidly evolving wildfire that tore through a community on a California hillside on Monday caused many homes to catch fire.
Hundreds of firemen attempted to contain the fire while the evacuations were underway. a report from San Bernardino County fire officials, the Edgehill fire broke out in the 3300 block of Beverly Drive on Little Mountain at approximately 2:40 p.m. According to early accounts, the fire, which more than 200 firemen battled, spread to at least 40 hectares (100 acres).
The San Bernardino County Fire Department posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, at approximately 6 p.m., stating that the fire had halted its forward advance and was presently holding at 54 acres (22 hectares) with 25% contained.
The department declared, "At this point, the fire is very much under control." Monday night, arson investigators were still attempting to ascertain the cause of the incident.
According to San Bernardino police, one individual was held for a few hours before being released. Videos from the scene, according to the Los Angeles Times, showed at least three homes completely destroyed by fire and the people escaping their burning homes under a sky full of smoke. In one video that went viral on social media, a man was seen racing up a hill with a big turkey in his arms and flames blazing behind him.
The National Weather Service declared an excessive heat warning for the San Bernardino area on Monday after temperatures reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
The warning was in effect until 11 p.m. on Tuesday, when temperatures are predicted to reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius).
All residents north of Edgehill Road, south of Ridge Line Drive, west to Beverly Drive and beyond, and east to Circle Road were ordered to evacuate. Authorities declared that the evacuation orders would stay in place as of Monday night at 9:00 p.m.
Los Angeles is located roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of San Bernardino.
