According to Biden, the killing of a Hamas leader doesn't help cease-fire talks.

The US has declared that it had no involvement in the political leader of Hamas's murder.

Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, was assassinated, and US President Joe Biden stated that this "doesn't help" negotiations over a possible truce in Gaza. On Wednesday, while on a visit to Tehran, the capital of Iran, Haniyeh passed away. Although Israel has not publicly commented on his killing, Iran and its supporters have blamed Israel.

Haniyeh was Hamas' most senior official, and he was heavily involved in cease-fire and hostage-release negotiations from his base in Qatar.

Israel and Hamas recently resumed cautious, indirect talks to try to reach a cease-fire in the Gaza conflict, however reports of progress vary. At the end of May, Mr. Biden revealed the conditions of an Israeli cease-fire plan.

Since then, Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have served as mediators in intermittent indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel. Earlier this week, Israel and Hamas accused one another of impeding development. Hamas claimed Israel had imposed new restrictions, while Mr Netanyahu's administration said Hamas had sought 29 revisions to the proposal.

The war began in October, when Hamas launched an unprecedented offensive on Israel, killing around 1,200 people and returning 251 others to Gaza as prisoners. The act sparked a major Israeli military response, killing at least 39,480 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Mr. Biden's observation  were his first on Haniyeh's assassination to the Hamas leader was killed.

Prior to bringing home American citizens as part of a prisoner swap with Russia, the US president gave a speech to press at the Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

He claimed to have discussed Israel's protection "against all threats from Iran" during his earlier Thursday conversation with Mr. Netanyahu, who has vowed to strike. Iran is the main supporter of Hamas and a fierce adversary of Israel.

Although Mr. Netanyahu stated following the murder that Israel had recently dealt "crushing blows" to Iran's proxy forces, Israel has not taken credit for the assassination. The assassination of Haniyeh occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East.
