In a few of the biggest American cities, making six figures has become the standard rather than the exception.
According to a recent survey by GoBankingRates, the typical household income is over $100,000 in six town's one- four of which are in California. San Francisco has the greatest household income per capita of any city, at $146,872.

Based on household income data from the U.S. Census for 2022 that has been converted to 2024 dollars, here are the ten wealthiest U.S. cities:

The median income in the 50 largest U.S. cities is $77,046, which is much more in line with what most Americans make. Motio Research estimates that the median yearly household income in 2024 will be $78,171. However, people's earnings can differ greatly between cities.
Detroit, which ranks 30th in population size, has a median income of $40,574. That is the lowest of any city and more than $100,000 and a bit less than the median in San Francisco California.
The difference is primarily due to the fact that the richest Americans are often concentrated in a small number of the biggest American cities. According to wealth intelligence business New World Wealth, there are 305,700 millionaires in San Francisco, second only to the 349,500 millionaires in New York City.
The richest cities also typically have a large concentration of lucrative positions in the banking, entertainment, technology, and health care sectors. A contributing problem is the paucity of land, which limits the construction of new homes and raises property values, keeping lower-class buyers out of the market.
